Who We Are
Rachel Thorner
Principal
Rachel Thorner is a veteran investigative research professional with over 15 years of experience as a specialist in Russia and the former Soviet states. Rachel has particular expertise in sanctions and other areas of risk specific to the region, and she has worked extensively on reputational, commercial and regulatory issues involving the region’s key stakeholders.
Prior to founding Troika Advisory, Rachel headed the Russia/CIS practice and ultimately oversaw the research center at a top boutique business intelligence consultancy, where she spent 7 years conducting risk-focused investigative research for major US and European financial institutions, law firms, multinational corporations and regulatory bodies. Previously, she worked for several years first at the Eurasia program of a leading Washington DC-based think tank and then providing Russia/CIS-related investigative services to corporate risk advisories.
Rachel began her career at the New York Times’ Moscow bureau, investigating news stories and writing a daily column, after which she served as a consultant providing Russian language expertise to the FBI and other US law enforcement agencies. She is fluent in English, Russian and Hebrew and has spent most of the last 20 years living in Moscow and Tel Aviv. She has a degree in Russian Studies from New York University.
